Paintings Jennie Augusta Brownscombe (1850–1936) was an American painter noted for her historical paintings, particularly those of revolutionary and colonial American history. Brownscombe was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, as the only daughter of an English farmer. After her father's death, she earned a living teaching and creating book and magazine illustrations. In 1871, she went to New York City and graduated from the Cooper Institute School of Design for Women and the National Academy of Design. In 1875, she became a founding member of the Art Students League, where she later served on the faculty. Her paintings depicted both emotional scenes and historical ones, and met with immediate success. Some of her popular paintings include Love's young dream (1887) and The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth (1914).
