  Marguerite Arosa (1854 - Paris, 23 February 1903) was a French painter and aquarellist from the second half of the nineteenth century.

She came from an upper middle class family in Paris. Her father, Gustave Arosa had an extensive collection of contemporary art, particularly paintings by Delacroix, Corot, Courbet, Daubigny and painters of the Barbizon School. When the mother of Paul Gauguin died in 1867, Gustave Arosa the guardian of her children. In the house of Arosa in Paris and his country house in St. Cloud, was the young Gauguin acquainted with this art. In 1871, Gustave Arosa gave a job to Gauguin as a stockbroker in a bank. And around Christmas 1872 Gauguin met his future wife, the Danish Mette-Sophie Gad, at the home of Arosa in Paris. [1] [2]

Marguerite Arosa is known for her landscapes and portraits but also painted a few marines. She had studied art under Mayer, Felix-Joseph Barrias (1822-1907) and the realistic painter Armand Gautier (1825-1894). She gave her enthusiasm for the arts to Gauguin, who along with her his first paintings. She brought him the oil technique and taught him how he had to apply in paintings. On Sundays she went painting together near Paris. -

She was a regular participant in the Paris Salon between 1882 and 1900. She was also on the international "Blanc et Noir" exhibition in Brussels in 1882 with a watercolor "Lilas in bloom." Among her works that have gained some notoriety his "Young Bather" (first shown in Brussels in 1884), "Andromeda" (Paris, 1885) and "Foggy Day" (1891). Her navy "Boats in the harbor" is estimated between £ 1500 and £ 3000. [3]

They also traveled to Britain twice and gave an exhibition at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.

But there is not much published about her life. Appear only sporadically works of her auctions. Her painting "Young Bather" by Sotheby's estimated between 60,000 and 80,000 U.S. dollars. [4] Her painting "Marine and lighthouse" in 2009 was sold at auction in Belgium for € 700 (+ costs).
