Biography
Nine of the eleven children of a carpenter cambianese William Grosso and Joan Vidotti, abandoned his studies at the seminary in Giaveno graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, and became professor of painting in 1889. His academic technique and its stylistic conservatism granted him a large following among customers, aristocratic and upper classes, and gained her numerous awards and recognitions. He exhibited throughout Europe, often attended Paris and in 1908 in Buenos Aires with the student Charles Gaudina to produce a cycle of decorations. A solo exhibition with over fifty works by Leonardo Bistolfi was presented at the Galleria Pesaro in Milan in 1926.

He was appointed Senator of the Kingdom March 2, 1929. He lived in Turin, where he married and had two children. He is buried in the Cemetery of Turin.
He painted portraits of royalty, of Benedict XV, of Giovanni Agnelli, Toscanini and Puccini, and often indulged in an erotic nude subjects in good taste, so as to be accused of immorality. Noted was the controversy provoked the first Venice Biennale in 1895 for his painting Supreme Meeting: inside a church, around the open coffin of Don Giovanni, the Fat represented a group of naked women, provoking condemnation of the patriarch of Venice, Giuseppe Sarto, the future Pius X, but also the defense of the writer Fogazzaro. The painting was later destroyed in a fire in the ship transporting him in an exhibition in the United States.
The Naked, painted a year later, confirmed the bad taste of its inspiration and its closure pompier Provincial to modern painting that is said in Europe: after all, the Fat loved said to be "just a painter," ironically defining " artists' those of his colleagues who refused clichés dell'estenuata academic tradition.
