Artist Index Edouard Toudouze, born July 24, 1848 in Paris where he died March 14, 1907, was a French genre painter, illustrator and stage designer, born into a wealthy family of artists and writers home Breton. Many of his works are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, including: Eros and Aphrodite. Family Toudouze The family environment of Edward Toudouze is conducive to his artistic development: her father Auguste Gabriel Toudouze (1811-1854) was an architect and engraver, his mother Adele Anais Colin (1822-1899) was a painter, daughter of the history painter Alexandre Colin, a relative of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. He is also uncle Jean Baptiste Auguste Leloir, genre painter, and cousins: Maurice Leloir and Alexandre Louis Leloir, both illustrators. Finally his brother Gustave Toudouze is both a novelist, playwright and journaliste1. The artist's career The Lily of the Valley by Edward Toudouze. After studying at the College Sainte-Barbe, Edward served his apprenticeship with Isidore Pils, and his uncle Leloir2 He participated in his first exhibition at the Paris Salon in 1867. He received the Rome Prize in 1871 for his work: Oedipus blind painter in the history category. By choosing mythological and historical themes, he remains aloof from the quarrels between academic and impressionnistes3 trend. Distinguished at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 by a silver medal, he was knighted in 1892 and Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1903. It appeals both to the public, critics and elected officials: State buys many of his paintings that will be distributed in all the museums of France. Edward Toudouze also illustrated many famous authors: Walter Scott: The Fortunes of Nigel, Woodstock. Theophile Gautier's Mademoiselle de Maupin. Prosper Merimee: Chronicle of the reign of Charles IX. Honore de Balzac: The Lily of the valley, Ursula Mirouet, The House Cat and Racket, Le Bal de Sceaux, The Vendetta, Gobseck, The Marriage Contract, The Prohibition, The Exiles, Louis Lambert, Seraphita, El Verdugo. Theater and tapestry In the foyer of the Opera-Comique, is a sign that he has made to order: the Jeu de Robin et Marion, illustrating the part of Adam from the Halle4. The Gobelins has commissioned a set of models tracing the history of Britain for tapestries that decorated until 1994 the Grand Chamber of the Palais de Justice de Rennes.
