Caesar Victor Louis Tallone (Savona, August 11, 1853 - Milan, 21 June 1919) was an Italian painter.

Biography

Only son (three sisters) of Peter Tallone, Pinerolo, his father born in Savona, Piedmontese army officer, was on duty. Later followed him to Parma in 1860, when these was assigned to head the real military college. After the early death of his father (in 1863, only 47 years old), he moved with his mother (Teresa Macario) in Alexandria, a city where she was born.

Early attracted to the arts, Caesar Tallone, worked in the workshop of Pietro Sassi, local artist, his talents were soon recognized and the Municipality of Alexandria helped to take courses in order: with the help of a patron (Dominic Boratto of Alexandria), was able to enroll, at nineteen years at the Academy of Brera in November 1872. A student of Giuseppe Bertini, has Previati fellow students, Spartacus Sailing, Gorge, Segantini. In 1873 he joined the "Family Art", a partnership led by Vespasian Bignami, where they found themselves scapigliatura and other members of the current art of the time as Cremona, Ranzoni, Giuseppe Grandi, Giovanni Segantini, Eugene Gignous, Emilio Longoni, Angelo Morbelli, Gaetano Previati, and many others.

In 1877 came his debut in the Annual Exhibition of Brera began for him his early recognition.

In 1880 he was in Rome where he met Groan, Mancini and Michetti and where he worked intensively. Exposition of Rome of 1883 was successful and the following year at the Turin. In 1884 he won the competition for the chair of Painting at the Carrara Academy of Bergamo, he held until 1898, when he went to Milan, the Accademia di Brera, where he taught from 1899 until his death.

In 1885 he won the competition for the professorship of painting the Accademia Carrara.

On April 18, 1888 he married Eleanor Tango, by whom he had nine children: Irene (1889-1905), Emilia (1891-1943), Teresa (1893-1933), Guido (1894-1967), Caesar Augustus (1895-1982), Ermanno (1896-1963), Albert (1898-1968), Vincenzina (1899-1912), Judith (1904-1997) (two sons died of premature birth in 1890 and 1892, still a student, Caesar had two sons, Aeneas and Mary in 1876 and 1879 by Paola Bellati).

The area in which Caesar expressed his best was the portrait. His portraits were very popular, even by the royal family: in fact he made several portraits of King Umberto and Queen Margherita.

By Joseph Pellizza Volpedo enrolled in her courses at Carrara. Because the Accademia Carrara was forbidden to women, Tallone opened a girls' school in Suardi palace, where he lived. In 1897 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale a portrait of his daughter Irene, who was acquired from the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome.

Giuseppe Bertini died in 1898, his old teacher of Brera, Tallone was named to replace him in 1899. Back in Milan, Brera had among his pupils Bonzagni, Carra, Ropes, St. Elias, Boccioni, Carpi, Dudreville, Tosi, Bucci.

He went to live and study there Crocerossa hold. Margherita Sarfatti met, Ada Negri, Sibilla Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Gabriele d'Annunzio.

With the approach of World War his health began to fail him, and poor physical condition were amassed to grief at the departure for the front of his four sons and many of his students of the Academy. Still continued to work with good results, but worsened at the end of March 1919 and had to leave teaching. Fatebenefratelli hospital died in June of that year.
